Man On WireLife as a Work of Art
Guest Blog post: by Suzanne Lieurance

Ever heard of Philippe Petit?

He’s the French high-wire artist who, on August 7, 1974, – when he was 24 years old – fulfilled a dream he had nurtured for six years.

That dream was to set up a cable (a high wire) between the twin towers of the World Trade Center and walk across it.

On that day so long ago in August, Petit fulfilled his dream all right.

But he didn’t just walk across a cable stretched between the Twin Towers.

He danced on it and even lay down on it, making 8 complete crossings between the two skyscrapers as a hundred thousand people gathered on the ground below to watch him. He was on the wire for over 45 minutes!

Last week my husband and I came across a documentary called Man On Wire illustrates how Petit prepared for this spectacular performance. The film was made in 2008 and features footage of a young Petit (he’s in his 60s now) and the friends who helped him plan and carry out his crazy caper.

Early in the film, he mentioned how someone told him, “Walk between the Twin Towers? That’s impossible.”

Petit answered, “Impossible? Yes…so how do we start planning it?”

The film itself was mesmerizing. My husband and I could only imagine what it must have been like to witness this event in person on the day it happened.

In the film, Petit described – with such glee – how he first got this idea to walk between the twin towers. As he gave his explanation, I found myself envious of his passion, his careful planning, his patience, and ultimately his courage to live his dream.

At one point in the film, Annie, the woman who was Petit’s young girlfriend back then, described what made him do things as extraordinary as this. She said, “He wanted to make every day of his life a work of art.”

Wow! What a wonderful way to live!

As I hope you can tell from this post, this film was not just entertaining. It was thought provoking. I encourage you to see it (it’s a free movie on Showtime this month or you can order the DVD from Amazon.com . But even without seeing the film, here are some questions for you to ponder today.

First – How can you make each day of YOUR life a work of art?You don’t need to plan something as extraordinary – or dangerous – as high-wire walking. Yet what small changes in the way you do things now can you implement to make your life itself a work of art?

Second – What “impossible” dream do you have that you need to start planning for?I look forward to your comments.

Shadow on a Picket Fence

One Woman's Garden

One Woman's Garden

Do you ever feel like a shadow on a picket fence? It makes you feel like you are a thin representation of who you really are.

Shadow-like your real self, is distorted by the space between the slots of the pickets and the direction of the light source.

You are as your shadow is, thinner perhaps, in your mind. You do not have the impact or recognition you wish, or thought, you once had or might have now. But, the shadow is a distorted version of you.

It really does depend on the direction and strength of the light that is focused on you and Who is shining the light, what kind of light is focused on you.

Self examination almost always shines a harsher light than a true friend or soul mate would. Why is that? Why don’t we see our strengths, our gifts, our value as easily as we see those qualities in others?

I think its time to use the noon-day sun, muted by a gentle breeze over an otherwise placid lake to find your own depth and inner beauty, your outer charm and dignity, your reflection of your worth. I once heard, “God don’t make no junk!” I think its true–how about you?

Does your picket fence elicit safety of home and hearth or distortions of shadow and light?

Wasted Talent

“The saddest thing in life is wasted talent.”
–Chaz Palminteri, “A Bronx Tale”

Teamwork

Who said an ant can't?

That talent can be anything from painting a picture, to writing a note or writing a novel. Whatever you can do. Listening is a talent not everyone can claim, but it is a sorely needed talent. If you watch a tiny ant you will know that every living creature has a purpose, a talent that he/she was meant to use for the benefit of all.

Whatever talent you have is valuable. But, you must make an effort to use it…know that you are enough, you are talented and don’t waste that talent by not using it. We are all here to contribute something

Ask yourself, what can you do today. What small thing can you do that will show you are here. There are no accidents…you are here for a reason, not a place holder for someone more important…you are that important person.

Make it a fantastic day.

Listens. A Human. The supplemental insurance program Humana – has Human

Adrift

Adrift - flash fiction and more

in its name but there are no humans working there…at least none that I could find to talk to when I wanted to report what I thought was abuse. Even my agent was not available when I called him. Had to leave a message on their mechanical answering machine.

We have become a nation of push button robots. There are no PEOPLE to talk to. You could of course perhaps wait 45 minutes to an hour to speak with someone who may or may not speak English – I do live in America and used to expect that was our native language, but more and more that is not the case either. It is so frustrating.

So it’s not Is there a woman I can talk to but is there ANYONE a human being that I can talk to.

There are a couple websites I may try to see if they are human or not. www.mommasaid.net

www.reellifewithjane.com

www.parentingwithcancer.com

These websites are supposed to be enterprizes started by real women who really care about others. Unfortunately, after wasting my day trying to reach care givers and medical professionals and insurance people – I — being retired and all, must be on my way to work to pay for the medicare supplemental insurance I have that covers NOTHING and I can’t even speak to a real human being when I have a concern.

Have you experience similar trouble?  Let me know, and maybe together we can find a network to help us all get what we need. Someone who is human to listen.
